Lisa Lanier
Lisa L. Lanier is an American personal injury attorney in North Carolina and the founder, President and CEO of Lanier Law Group, P.A., a plaintiff personal injury firm with nine offices in the state.[1][2] Born in High Point and educated at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she began her career in insurance defense, defending physicians and trucking companies, before founding Lanier Law Group in 1995.[1] She represents injured people and survivors of sexual abuse.[1]
Lanier represented plaintiffs in a lawsuit brought by 65 alumni of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts that settled for $12.5 million in May 2024,[3][4][5] and her firm brought McKinney v. Goins, in which the Supreme Court of North Carolina upheld the SAFE Child Act's lookback window for child sexual abuse claims in January 2025.[6] She and her colleague Robert O. Jenkins received the 2025 Kellie Crabtree Award from North Carolina Advocates for Justice.[7] Since 2008 she has been the "Official Attorney" on Lawyer Up, a weekly legal segment on Rock 92's The 2 Guys Named Chris Show, and she also appears on 107.5 KZL's Jared & Katie in the Morning.[8][9]
Early life and education [edit]
Lanier was born in High Point, North Carolina, and was raised on a farm.[1] She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1989, and received her Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1992.[1] She was admitted to the North Carolina State Bar the same year.[1][10]
Career [edit]
Insurance defense
Lanier began practice as an associate in insurance defense at a large law firm in the Research Triangle, where she defended physicians and trucking companies.[1] In 1995 she left to start her own practice on the plaintiff side, representing injured people.[1]
Lanier Law Group
Lanier Law Group, P.A. was founded in 1995, with Lanier as its founder, President and CEO.[1] The firm has nine offices in North Carolina and more than 70 lawyers and legal professionals.[2] Its practice covers personal injury, medical malpractice, catastrophic injury, wrongful death, workers' compensation, Social Security disability and sexual abuse claims.[1] The firm advertises under the taglines "Hire a Heavyweight", "When Results Matter Most", "Put a Heavyweight In Your Corner" and "We Won't Back Down".[2] In February 2025 North Carolina Lawyers Weekly profiled Lanier as the firm's President and CEO when naming her to its Personal Injury Power List.[11]
Notable cases [edit]
UNC School of the Arts litigation
In 2021, 65 alumni of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) filed a lawsuit alleging sexual abuse of students at the school. Lanier represented plaintiffs in the case and spoke about the UNCSA abuse lawsuits in interviews with the Winston-Salem Journal that year.[12] A $12.5 million settlement ending the lawsuit was announced on May 17, 2024, with the University of North Carolina System paying $10 million and UNCSA paying $2.5 million over four years.[3][4][5][13] North Carolina Advocates for Justice reported the result under the headline "Lanier Gets $12.5M Settlement For Alumni In School of the Arts Sex Abuse Case".[14]
McKinney v. Goins
North Carolina's SAFE Child Act created a lookback window that revived older civil claims for child sexual abuse. In McKinney v. Goins (No. 109PA22-2), the plaintiffs were represented by Lanier, Robert O. Jenkins and Donald S. Higley II of Lanier Law Group, and the Gaston County Board of Education brought the appeal. On January 31, 2025, the Supreme Court of North Carolina upheld the lookback window.[6] Later that year North Carolina Advocates for Justice gave Lanier and Jenkins, together with their clients, its Kellie Crabtree Award.[7]
Past results do not guarantee a similar outcome in any other case.

Some recognition listed in her biography comes from member listings, namely the National Association of Distinguished Counsel, Lawyers of Distinction and Haute Lawyer Network, rather than awards, and the 2022 announcement of her Super Lawyers selection was a press release issued by her firm.[1][24]
